Creativity Shaped by Generations of Makers
From orchestral performances and international music festivals to museums and vibrant creator communities, the arts pulse throughout all five localities of the Lynchburg region.
Creativity is part of the daily rhythm here, shaped by historic architecture and generations of makers inspired by the rolling Blue Ridge landscape. Anchored by institutions like the Academy Center of the Arts, the region nurtures local talent, with cultured experiences like the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra providing immersive experiences for audiences since 1983.
Whether it’s live music, theatrical performances, or artisan vendors from around the world, our creative communities not only reflect the region’s past, but actively shape its future.

Creativity spills from the Lynchburg region’s many galleries and historic theaters onto our streetscapes and across our open-air festivals. This is a place where artists, musicians, designers, and storytellers find the space and the audience to do their best work, and where that energy is genuinely woven into the fabric of daily life. For generations, trolling Blue Ridge landscape and the region’s layered history have been inspiring makers here — and you can feel it.
At the heart of it all is the Academy Center of the Arts in downtown Lynchburg, a campus that includes a black box theatre, the Harrington Gallery Building, and the beautifully restored Historic Academy of Music Theatre — all in one walkable corner of Main Street. Each year, the Academy engages thousands of Central Virginians through stage events, arts education, gallery exhibits, and community outreach.
In Bedford County, the Bower Center for the Arts brings that same creative spirit to a smaller, equally charming setting. Housed in a historic building dating to 1847, the Bower serves as a downtown anchor for Bedford, offering galleries, resident artist studios, performing arts, classes for all ages — all rooted in a mission of community, inclusivity, and creative growth.
For fine art lovers, the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College is a genuine hidden gem. Its outstanding collection of American art spans paintings, works on paper, and photographs from the 19th through 21st centuries, featuring works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Mary Cassatt, and Winslow Homer. The best part? Admission to the Maier Museum is always free.
From the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra and the Lynchburg Museum to public murals, cultural festivals, and thriving independent galleries, the arts here aren’t a weekend experience. They’re part of how this region lives.
